What is Clinical Psychology?
Psychological evaluations are designed to clarify emotional reactions to specific stressors and events, and put those reactions into the context of the patient’s life. Early life stress, long-standing personality characteristics, level of intellectual and academic functioning and social adjustment prior to an event are established through clinical interview and standardized testing. Emotional reactions to stress, trauma, medical injury or pain are then qualitatively and quantitatively measured and documented.
Diagnoses are established, causation and level of disability determined, and practical suggestions made regarding ability to return to work or school, necessary modifications, medical treatment needed, and long-term prognosis. A detailed report and consultation with the patient and/or referral source clarifies what level of functioning and goals are reasonable to expect for the future. Referrals for specific treatment are made. In-house individual and group psychotherapy is offered on a limited basis.
