What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is an area of specialization within clinical psychology. It focuses on the interaction between brain disorders and problems in thinking, behavior, mood and personality. Extensive research and clinical work have identified problems stemming from different pathologies (e.g., closed head injury, Alzheimer’s) as well as from injuries to different parts of the brain. Well-standardized tests (meeting medical as well as Frye & Daubert standards) can determine brain functioning and emotional status, determine the relationship to a causal event (e.g., trauma, pain, emotional stress), document strengths and weaknesses, and help guide decision-making regarding treatment needs, ability to return to work, disability status, and long-term prognosis. Cases not involving brain injury (e.g., emotional reactions to pain or stress) require less extensive testing, but a comprehensive neuropsychological exam generally involves the following:

I.  Consultation with referral source and review of records.

II.  Interview with patient

·  Pre-incident functioning
·  Description of the incident and subsequent symptoms and treatment
·  Current symptoms and treatment
·  Prior medical history
·  Medications, substance use
·  Psychosocial history including school and work
·  Clinical presentation in interview and mental status

III.  Testing

·  Statistical estimate of premorbid IQ and level of functioning
·  Tests for validity (conscious or unconscious exaggeration or symptom magnification)
·  Information processing speed
·  Attention and concentration
·  Motor system functioning
·  Sensory system functioning
·  Language
·  Memory
·  Visual perception and constructional ability
·  Complex reasoning including current IQ and frontal lobe/executive functions
·  Mood and personality, and how they interact with physical/mental symptoms

IV.  A detailed comprehensive report is prepared within 30 days (expedited turnaround available) that documents exam findings and addresses causation, treatment recommendations, impact on the patient’s pragmatic daily functioning and necessary modifications and accommodations. Consultation is provided to the referral source regarding specifics of the evaluation and analysis of other evaluations that may have been done. Dr. Epperson is available for depositions and expert witness testimony to explain the results of the evaluation.
